Time to Stretch
I’ve been doing some research lately on stretching—yes, the kind you do before a workout—and it’s wild how much it parallels spiritual growth. Think about it: in both your body and your soul, stretching is necessary if you want to get stronger. It’s not comfortable, but it’s absolutely crucial.
Physically, stretching boosts flexibility, improves range of motion, increases blood flow, and actually helps prevent injuries. It primes your muscles to perform and respond better. And spiritually? The same thing happens when God stretches us. It may not feel good in the moment, but it prepares us for growth, for greater endurance, and for the kind of strength that lasts.
Here are four ways stretching in the gym reflects stretching in our walk with God:
1. Flexibility Means More Freedom
When muscles are tight, movement is limited. The same goes for our hearts. When we’re spiritually rigid—resisting change, avoiding discomfort—we cut off what God wants to do.
“Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back…” —Isaiah 54:2
2. Better Function Requires Surrender
Muscles work best when they’re conditioned and stretched. Our spirits respond better to God when we’re yielded and open.
“Strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees…” —Hebrews 12:12–13
3. Preparation Prevents Damage
In the gym, stretching helps avoid injury. In life, spiritual stretching through prayer, accountability, and reflection protects us from falling into harmful patterns.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” —Proverbs 4:23
4. Strength Is Built in the Tension
You don’t get stronger by staying still. Stretching enlarges your capacity. Likewise, God uses seasons of challenge to build endurance, character, and ultimately—hope.
“Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” —Romans 5:3–4
Here’s the truth: you can’t mature without movement. Growth takes work. It takes coaching, community, and a willingness to lean into the stretch instead of running from it. Whether it’s stepping out in faith, forgiving someone who hurt you, or taking on a new responsibility that scares you—these are the moments when God is stretching you. Not to break you, but to build you.
Reflection & Application:
-
Where is God stretching you right now?
-
Are you resisting the discomfort or leaning into it?
-
Who’s speaking into your life and helping you grow?
-
What small step can you take this week to embrace the stretch?
Final Thought:
Growth doesn’t happen without tension. Stretching is God’s way of preparing you for more. Don’t fight it. Let it form you. Trust that what feels uncomfortable now is strengthening you for what’s next.
“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because… that person will receive the crown of life…” —James 1:12
